I would say there was a time that you could gauge my mental health by the number of magazines or books I had purchased.
When I was low or in a down mood I would spend lots of time in the university or area bookstores, flipping the pages of magazines and books and walking out with armfuls of purchases. I bet some of the covers were never cracked again but it was just my escape and the sense of possibility the words & images & words & images & words & images those volumes offered provided relief from whatever was affecting me at the moment.
The shelves that surround me today are still filled with so many of those finds from so many years ago. Maybe I’ll crack the cover on a few this evening.
